The frustration that most pet owners have if they go to shelters is the lack of effective house training. Remember that your dog is a family member and as such is worth the time and effort required to correctly house break them, so you can be a happier pet owner and your dog can be happily with their family members instead of in a shelter.
The house training method we will see in this article is crates training. I consider crates – training a great gift for your dog. As your dog will learn to love his or her crate. The crate will be a safe place to be if they are stressed or just when they need some peace and quiet. Crate training is the ideal housebreaking method for any good dog trainer and is widely considered the best way to train your animal to do their business outdoors.
The Crate Training starts with an initial 4 week process. During this process, your dog should be placed at any time in any of the following places:
- in their crates
- On the grasses
- in front of you.
It may seem harsh but remember that this is only for the first four weeks of training. Dogs have a preference for where they do their business. We want that to be the grass.
The first step to effective cage training is to keep in mind what size cage is required. Make sure the cage is big enough for the dog. Dogs do not soil the area where they are sleeping or staying, which makes cage training effective. But if you buy too large a cage, the dog will be able to do his business in one side of the cage and still be able to lay comfortably in the other end. We want to teach the dog that it can control himself whit the crates and can hold it until you can leave him outside. Remember also to not insert anything absorbent in the crate such as a towel or pillow — this may allow the dog to soak the object and still be comfortable from its own mess.
The first four weeks
So it can’t make messes in inappropriate places, every time you aren’t watching your puppy, he or she should be in their crate.
The first four weeks of training require frequent trips to the beach for the pup : immediately after feeding or watering your puppy, take it to the grass. He also needs to immediately go to the dog just after waking or when it wakes from a nap.
Don’t forget that your puppy MUST be watching every move of the exterior of the box. One good tip to remember is to stick your puppy leash to your belt so it is always ready for you.
Remember that consistency is the key – teach this to all family members and not to let your dog roam outside the house. Without consistent cage training it could develop a preference for using the restroom on carpet or tile over grass.
